What does it mean to be a prisoner in one’s body? How do we co-exist and thrive with the one body we have when we feel like it’s failing us? The Anatomy Lesson follows Gemma as she comes to terms with the ways she’s harmed her body, how it’s harmed her, and her journey to find peace co-existing with it. We follow as she undergoes medical procedures, experiences surreal trips inside herself, and struggles to love and inhabit the body that she never expected to live in.

“I am fascinated by the premise of this piece and its questions: what happens when pelvic organs are no longer living in the place they were meant to, the place they started? We know if we abuse our bodies with substances that our organs will suffer. We know what we know, but how much is there for us still to learn? What must we reconcile with? How does a person make sense of their body when it’s falling apart from the inside out?…Literally.” – Beatriz Pizano
