Aluna Café: Reunión de Dani Zelko (en español)

Dani Zelko

April 6, 2019

Centro Cultural Casa Maíz, 1280 Finch Ave. West #204

120 minutes

The Aluna Café returns to Casa Maíz with a Spanish-language reading of extracts from Reunión, edited by Dani Zelko, with members of Grupo Teatro Libre and Aluna Theatre. This is a free event, with food for all to share.

Argentinian artist Dani Zelko visited cities, towns, borders and rural communities in Mexico, the United States and Canada. He met people that left their life in the South, looking for a new life in the North of the continent. Dani invited them to write a couple of poems. They spoke to him, as he wrote by hand everything they said. Every time the person would inhale, Dani began to write a new line in their poem. Nothing was recorded. Their poems were printed out the same day. The next day, if circumstances allowed it, every person would read their poem in a circle of nine chairs, giving away copies of their publications to whoever came to listen. In this gathering, the word becomes oral, and poems exist between two people instead of between two pages.

On this occasion, five poems born from this experience will be read: two of them from Canada, from when Dani Zelko was artist-in-residency at RUTAS, Aluna Theatre’s international festival.

Casa Maíz is a cultural space with the mission to support the cultural, sustainable and participatory development of the Latin American community in Toronto and Canada. This work is carried out through the arts, research and culture in its broader definition and through the promotion of creativity, thought and innovation of groups and individuals.

Grupo Teatro Libre’s mandate is to create theatre in a participatory and collective way, staging original pieces or plays by Latin American writers in their original language. The group wishes to disseminate Latin American Theatre in Toronto and directly connect with the community.
