12 Hour Comics Night

12 Hour Comics Night invites audiences to witness a mass comic creation-action.

Bringing together local cartoonists who each attempt to create a complete 12‑page comic in only 12 hours. Comic making is usually slow, detailed, and often solitary work, with a single page taking days to finish. This challenge has become a near impossible tradition within the comics community, testing endurance, intuition, and creative spontaneity.

There are no assigned themes and artists do not prepare full scripts in advance. Participants arrive with only their skills and whatever ideas emerge under pressure. The result is a living snapshot of Toronto’s comic arts scene, capturing current styles, interests, and concerns. Toronto has an extraordinary number of talented cartoonists, yet most cannot build a sustainable career in this field. Institutional support remains limited and many artists face a history of undervaluation. This installation honours their creativity, resilience, and the vibrant culture they sustain.

About the artist

Lorena Torres Loaiza, Host Cartoonist

Lorena Torres Loaiza is a Colombian Canadian artist working in fiction, comics, illustration, art installation, and theatre design, sometimes crossing artistic disciplines within a single project. She is more interested in a cohesive narrative voice and tone than in any specific format. She is currently expanding this range into more zine making, pushing the low-tech limits of her practice and investigating which tools are more useful as resources change and questions of material use and sustainability come to the forefront of all artistic industries. She’s also looking for spaces where people can connect without a tech company or algorithm standing in the way.
