Installation

Maternar y otras (Mothering and others) is a multidisciplinary installation exploring the profound relationship between mother and child. Blending video, sound, animation, punch needle embroidery, and tufted rugs, it creates a richly textured sensory space that reflects the emotional and relational complexities of mothering.
The work expands traditional narratives to include self-mothering, step-parenting, chosen family, and shifting identities. It also honours the reciprocal nature of caregiving, centering play, imagination, and the deep wisdom children offer.
Maternar y otras is a space for reflection, tenderness, and connection—an invitation to consider mothering as an evolving, creative, and relational act of care, transformation, and becoming.
Alejandra’s work just gets better and better. Always looking for the magic in the familiar, this artist explores emotions through a rich visual world of imagination. This work launches from the personal to evoke larger questions about caring, caring for, cared by and more.

About the artist
Alejandra Higuera
Alejandra Higuera is a queer multidisciplinary visual storyteller and Expressive Arts Therapy student who crafts poetic narratives through video, illustration, animation, embroidery, and projection. Her work is deeply rooted in themes of mothering, healing, migration, feminism, memory, and grief. She embraces motherhood as a reciprocal journey—learning from her child as much as she teaches.
As a Latinx/e artist, Alejandra supports our ever-changing identities, resisting homogenization through a decolonizing lens.
